Desert Refrigerator…DIY

We give our horses lots of carrots in the hot summer and for a long time, I use to keep them in my wife's office refrigerator...but this year she kicked me out!  The summer heat wilts the carrots and I like to give my horses a nice cool treat at the end of a hot day, so...I built a Desert Refrigerator...something to keep the carrots cold in the summer and warm in the winter...

1 Desert Refrigerator Materials

So what you need is an outside trash can, I used one that we had been using for recycling but the lid broke, so I decided to reuse it for this project!

4 Desert Refrigerator Outside Container

Then I needed a metal trash can to hold the carrots inside

3 Desert Refrigerator Metal Container

Then I needed Sand...about 3 bags should do it!

2 Desert Refrigerator Sand

To put this together, I needed the larger plastic can on the outside, so I washed it and cleaned it out, then added at least 2 inches of fine play sand on the bottom...

5 Desert Refrigerator 2 inches of Sand on bottom

After I put the sand in the bottom, I put the metal trash can in and centered it so I had about 1 inch of space around the outside and between the two cans...

Then I needed to add my sand, I put the lid on so I didn't get any of the grit inside the metal can...

7 Desert Refrigerator Put lid on metal container

Then I added my sand and began to push it in between the metal can and the outer can into the 1 inch space...it took some hard work, and sometimes some pinched fingers, but I got it all down in there...

8 Desert Refrigerator Put sand on top of lid and push into empty spaces between cans

Then, I put some nice, cold, fresh Rocky Mountain water on top of the lid to wash all the sand off and poured it slow so it would soak down into the sand, be patient so it doesn't over flow!

9. Desert Refrigerator Pour water on to sand and let it soak in

Now that things are washed off and the sand is in place, the water is into the sand, my carrots have a nice cool place to stay in the summer and a warm insulated place to stay in the sub zero winters!

11. Desert Refrigerator Keeps our Horse Carrots nice and cool

Now, how this works is...with the water in the sand, evaporation of the water will keep the metal can cool, which keeps whatever is in the metal can cool.  After I put the carrots in and waited about 1 hour, I lifted the lid and it was as cold as an electric refrigerator!  Now my horses are happy and so is my wife!
